Building Capacity
Investing in people, organizations, and the tools they need to lead affordable housing into the future.
A sector ready to scale
Community housing organizations are experienced, capable, and ready to grow. More than 130 have initiated applications through the Rental Protection Fund, and 31 have already pre-qualified. These groups bring a wealth of experience in owning, operating, and renewing affordable housing, and they are actively expanding their impact. Collectively, their portfolios include:
550+
buildings
22,000+
units
550+
units currently under development
They’re at the heart of B.C.'s housing landscape—and they’re growing their impact every day.
Building equity
The Rental Protection Fund puts assets in the hands of non-profits, allowing them to build equity, unlock financing, and scale their impact. In 2024 alone, these investments added over $500 million to the value of the community housing sector.

From application to ownership - building capacity at every step
Pre-Qualification
Non-profits demonstrate readiness through a streamlined pre-qualification process focused on experience and operational capacity.
Acquisition Support
Pre-qualified groups receive access to funding templates, financial modeling tools, and advisory support to strengthen their applications.
Sustainable Ownership
Deals are structured for day-one sustainability—no ongoing operating subsidies required. Peer support and mentorship continue post-acquisition.
Turning acquisitions into assets
Scaling up to meet the housing affordability crisis in B.C. means equipping non-profits with assets they can leverage—not just for today, but for the future. Every property acquisition is designed to be financially sustainable, empowering non-profits to:
Build equity and leverage future growth
Create self-reliance for the long term
Deliver affordability without ongoing government subsidies

Local leadership in action: Hiy̓ám̓ Housing & Housing Squamish

Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society (Hiy̓ám̓ Housing) is a non-profit organization committed to developing and managing affordable housing for Squamish People. Housing Squamish was founded in 2021 through a dialogue between the District of Squamish and the local community housing sector.
When Hiy̓ám̓ Housing partnered with the relatively new non-profit, Housing Squamish, to acquire Tantalus Manor, they secured culturally connected homes and launched a powerful mentorship model. Hiy̓ám̓ Housing took on a mentoring role, enabling Housing Squamish to gradually build equity in the property over time, while gaining operational experience, and strengthening its role as an affordable housing provider in a fast-growing region.
Since the acquisition, two Squamish Nation households have moved in—a reflection of housing rooted in community and culture.
Practical tools for a lasting impact
The Rental Protection Fund is more than financial support—it’s a hands-on partner in building long-term capacity within the community housing sector.
Through ongoing support during the application process and access to tailored resources, organizations gain skills they can carry forward to future projects.
The Fund has built a complete toolkit for community housing providers including:
