Who we are

The Rental Protection Fund is an independent, non-profit organization established in June 2023 with an initial investment of $500 million by the Province of British Columbia. The Fund is led by the community housing sector and strives to enhance housing affordability and stability for both new and existing tenants by empowering non-profit housing organizations and cooperatives.

2016-2021

Nearly 100,000 affordable rental homes renting below $1,000 per month were lost. A stark reminder of what’s at stake without intervention to preserve affordability.

July 2024

The Fund works with Ballenas Housing Society to secure affordable housing for seniors in Parksville. This critical support helps maintain stable housing for residents on the Island.

July 2024

Connective protects more than 300 affordable homes across nine properties on Vancouver Island with the Fund’s support. A major acquisition keeps hundreds of people housed from Duncan to Port Hardy.

August 2024

68 affordable rental homes protected in the heart of Oak Bay by the Fund and the Greater Victoria Housing Society. Action taken to preserve affordability in Victoria.

August 2024

75 affordable homes secured in North Vancouver and Squamish by Hiy̓ám̓ Housing and Housing Squamish. A unique partnership ensures local housing stays affordable for long-term residents.

September 2024

The Fund secures 147 affordable rental homes across the Lower Mainland with Lookout Housing + Health, Catalyst, and Connective. Strategic collaboration delivers large-scale protection across three communities.

December 2024

More affordable homes protected in New Westminster with New Hope Community Services Society. This acquisition helps maintain vital housing for newcomers and families.

April 2025

The Fund expands its support in the Interior, working with Connective Kamloops to protect 25 homes in the community. A growing footprint brings affordability preservation to new communities.

June 2025

The Fund celebrates the protection of 220 more homes across the province from Fort St. John to Vancouver. Momentum builds as the Fund’s work scales to meet demand across British Columbia.

July 2025

The first acquisition supported by the Fund in Richmond – Tikva Housing protects 45 homes in an in-demand neighbourhood. Affordable homes secured in a high-cost area, ensuring long-term stability.

January 2023

The BC Rental Protection Fund was created through the efforts of the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA), BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA), and Co-operative Housing Federation of BC (CHF BC).Leaders int the community housing sector and the Provincial Government came together to establish a bold new solution to protect affordable housing.

May 2023

Katie Maslechko is announced as the CEO of the Rental Protection Fund. A dedicated leader steps in to guide the Fund’s mission and impact.

June 2023

The Fund launches pre-approval applications for non-profit housing providers. Non-profits gain a new tool to act quickly when buildings come up for sale, kickstarting acquisitions.

February 2024

The Fund announces its first acquisition – 290 at-risk co-op homes protected in partnership with the Community Land Trust of BC in Coquitlam. A milestone moment: the first homes are secured through the Rental Protection Fund.

February 2024

The Fund secures 16 rental homes in Esquimalt with Lu’ma Native Housing Society. A partnership with an Indigenous housing provider strengthens community stability and affordability.

March 2024

More than 100 homes preserved in Langley with the New Vista Society. Another step forward in preventing the loss of deeply affordable homes and allowing seniors to stay in their homes.

May 2024

The Fund supports CMHA Vernon & District to protect and renew 25 homes in Vernon. Ensuring vulnerable residents can continue to live affordably in their community.

May 2024

56 affordable rental homes protected in Burnaby with Brightside Community Homes. Preservation efforts keep long-term renters housed in a high-cost city.
